2 Corinthians 9:6-8

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” Proverbs 3:9 (NIV)

A couple of years ago, we moved from our home of over 30 years. It was an opportunity to dig deep and donate what we no longer needed. I was proud to think how my treasures (although many had been in boxes for years) could find new lives in new homes, possibly fulfilling many needs. After reading this verse, I reflected on how I had this all wrong.

The reference to “first fruits” in Deuteronomy 26:9 refers to the practice of giving God the first and best portion of the harvest. I, on the other hand, had it backwards by giving what I no longer needed or what I had left over. God calls us to be good stewards of the resources (financial, time, property, etc.) he has entrusted to us, and encourages us to use those resources to bless others.

Opportunities are all around us if we make ourselves aware. Today, I drove past a billboard requesting aid for hurricane victims. Needs never end, especially this time of year as we enter winter and the holiday season. During this upcoming holiday season, how can you use your possessions to better serve and support those in need? Bible commentator Warren Wiersbe says, “our wealth is never an end to itself, but a means to impact lives around us.”

We ask God to direct our daily paths, but at the end of the day, do we reflect on what we have done for his Kingdom? Everything we have comes from God; we are only managers of his resources. Do your possessions have first place in your life, or do you view them as an opportunity to show God’s love for those in need? We can honor our Lord by focusing on what is important to him. “For where your treasures are, there your heart will be also.”  Matthew 6:21 (NIV)

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven,
Direct us to use the resources you have given us for your purposes, and not for ours. Help us to honor your generosity and grace by directing our lives and our possessions towards those in need, in accordance with your will.
In your name we pray. Amen
