Psalm 139:13-14

You created the deepest parts of my being. You put me together inside my mother’s body. How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that. What you have done is wonderful. I know that very well. Psalm 139:13-14 (NIRV)

As a teen of the 80’s I feel blessed to have been in the front row of one of the greatest musical generations ever. The advent of the music video and the uptick in technology changed the course of music. The Australian heavy metal band AC/DC wrote and performed the song “Who Made Who.” It was included on the soundtrack for a movie called “Maximum Overdrive” based on a Stephen King short story. The song questions human existence and its relationship with and reliance on technology and its transformation into a sentient entity. Seems to me that maybe this song was ahead of its time in recognizing the way that we are becoming more impersonal with each other. With the daily progression of Artificial Intelligence and personalized technology the reliance we have on that technology has seemingly created less personal interaction and more individual isolation.

But as Christians, if we ponder the first half of the chorus to “Who Made Who,” maybe we have a bit different take in our answer to that conundrum.

who made who, who made you
who made who
ain't nobody told you
who made who, who made you
if you made them and they made you

We know who created us. God did. He created us in his image. He created us with purpose. He created us for relationship, with him and with others. I once read that God “shaped” us into the individuals we are, similarly simple and uniquely complex at the same time.

How God SHAPED us as a person.

Spirituality - God provides us with the Holy Spirit as a means of interconnectedness with us and between us
Heart - God provides us with our emotions and capacity for love and empathyz
Ability -  God gifted us with our abilities to be a blessing to him and others with our minds, hands and feet
Personality - God creates us as individuals with a unique combination of temperament, character and persona.
Experiences - God provides us with encounters and opportunities to mold and develop us in our Earthly life

If you look around a bit you can see that God loves variety. He has made so many similar things so uniquely different. How intricate and involved the human body is coupled with the human spirit. Your personality. Your essence. All shaped by your experiences and relationships from birth throughout childhood and life until death.

As we continue to go through life, shouldn’t it be done in the way God intended? In relationship with each other. Not on the reliance of developed technology. Certainly many great things have and will happen because of our ingenuity in developing helpful technology that can keep us safe and healthy as well as informed and educated. Technology can provide fun and entertainment as respite or escapism to the drudgeries of life. But let’s not let it overtake the interpersonal relationships and experiences we provide each other. The way God intended.

There is no doubt who made who. God did. Honor him with the way you live your life.

Questions for Reflection:

  • In what ways does current technology help you each and every day?
  • In what ways does it pull you away from the people in your life?

Prayer:

Good and Gracious God, We thank you for the gift of life. We thank you for the uniqueness that is in each of us. Help us to continue to be in relationship with you and each other. To entertain each other, to help each other, to encourage each other, to be a blessing to each other. Amen
