Psalm 139:13-18

For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, that I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them. They are more than the sand; I come to the end. I am still with you. Psalm 139:13-18 (NRSVUE)

David isn’t just saying God made him—he’s saying God crafted him on purpose and with warm, loving hands. The language is special: knit, woven, formed. It’s the language of a God who doesn’t mass-produce souls but hand-stitches them.

David goes on to say God’s thoughts toward him are vast, precious, more numerous than the grains of sand. This isn’t just about creating David as a single event, it’s about ongoing care. God didn’t simply design him and walk away. He continued to think of David, watched over him, and surrounded him with His presence. The same is true for you and me.

These verses are a reminder that before anyone else saw you, God saw you. Before anyone else understood you, God understood you. Before anyone else chose you, God chose you.

You are not an afterthought. You are not overlooked. You are not forgotten. You are intentionally made, continually held and forever loved.

Questions for Reflection:

Take a moment to imagine God knitting you together—your personality, your gifts, your quirks, your strengths, even the parts of you you’re still learning to love. Nothing about you is accidental.

  • What special attributes did God weave into your being?
  • How do these special attributes also bless those around you?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for forming me with intention and love. Help me see myself through Your eyes—fearfully and wonderfully made. Let Your countless thoughts toward me calm my fears and guide my steps. Remind me that I am known, chosen, and held by You - forever. Amen.
