Matthew 25:35
For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. Matthew 25:35 (NIV)
It seems that from the time we are little we are taught about how we should relate to strangers. “Always be wary of someone you don’t know” and “Stranger danger” are two phrases that summarize the point that our parents, siblings, teachers, law enforcement officers, and others in positions of authority or influence want us to remember. And while this advice is based on the desire to protect and shield us from the truly evil people in our society that prey on the weak and vulnerable (both young and old), as we mature, we hopefully should be able to differentiate between those who are predators and those who truly need our help.
It is really easy to lump those that are different from us, or those who may be in a different socio-economic group, or those who may come from a different cultural background, or those that may have mental or physical health issues, or those who are down on their luck in the “Stranger” category. That generally means we can steer clear of them. We can avoid making contact. We can avoid being a part of their messy issues. And the less we know, the less we have to deal with. We don’t really want to get personally involved. After all, there are a lot of other ways we can help people without getting personally involved, right? It certainly is the easy way out.
There are many safe ways to help the “Strangers” in our society, showing them the love, compassion, understanding, help, and support that our Lord Jesus inspired us to provide. And keep in mind that “Strangers” are not always the evil people lurking in dark alleys viewing the vulnerable as prey. They are any that are in need. Look for opportunities each day to reach out to the “Strangers” in your lives or that you may encounter. Look for opportunities to serve and provide hope. Truly live in the ways of our Lord!
Thanks be to God!
Questions for Reflection:
- What “Strangers” have you encountered recently?
- How did you treat them or react to them?
- Did you make contact or simply avoid them?
- How could you have made a difference in their lives?
