Isaiah 6:1-8

It was the year King Uzziah died that I, Isaiah first saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne and the train of his robe filled the Temple. Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet and with two they flew. They were calling out to each other, “Holy, holy is the Lord of the Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with your glory!” Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations and the entire building with smoke. Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips and I live among people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of the Heaven’s Armies.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, “See this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.” Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us and I SAID, “Here I am Send me. Isaiah 6:1-8 (NLT)

Sometimes we do not realize we can help people even when they do not know it is us helping them. I am going to share one of my favorite stories about a marine who was a blessing to a man in need and when called he served.

A nurse took the tired anxious serviceman to a bedside, “Your son is here,” she said to the old man as he lay in his bed. Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, the old man dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside his oxygen tent. He reached out his hand and the Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man’s limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat holding the old man’s hand and offering words of love and strength. Occasionally the nurse suggested the Marine rest awhile but he refused. Whenever the nurse came into the room, she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only holding tightly to his son all night long.

About dawn the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand that he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she needed to do, he waited. Finally she returned. As she started to offer words of sympathy the Marine interrupted her. “Who was that man,” he asked. The nurse turned startled, “He was your father,” she answered. “No, he wasn’t, I have never seen him before in my life,” the Marine replied. Then why didn’t you say something when I took you to him? I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew that he needed his son and his son wasn’t here yet. When I realized he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son and knowing how much he needed me, I stayed. I knew he needed me.

Question for Reflection:

  • Next time someone needs you ----- Will you be there?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Please help us to be there when you need us and when others need us. You have blessed us in so many ways. Please help us to be your messengers and to be able to show your love to others. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
