Ephesians 4:17-24
So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:17-24 (NIV)
We’ve all had those seasons where we feel like we’re just sleepwalking through a life that doesn’t actually fit us. Maybe it’s a job that drains your soul, a habit of cynicism that keeps you isolated, or the weight of trying to live up to someone else’s expectations of "perfection."
In our passage from Ephesians 4:17-24, Paul gets pretty blunt about this. We see a warning against living in the "futility of their thinking," where hearts are hardened, and understanding is darkened. We can see this "darkness" not as a threat of divine punishment, but as the very real misery of being disconnected from our neighbors, from our true selves, and from the Divine Breath that sustains us.
The text uses this vivid imagery of clothing: stripping off the old self and putting on the new. The "old self" isn't necessarily about being a "bad person." It’s about the parts of us that have been corrupted by "deceitful desires": things like greed, systemic apathy, or the need to be right at the expense of being kind. It’s the ego-driven version of us that treats the world as a commodity rather than a sacred gift.
Good news! The "new self" isn't something you have to manufacture through sheer willpower. Verse 23 says to be "made new in the attitude of your minds." This is an ongoing, internal transformation. It’s about shifting our perspective from scarcity to abundance, from exclusion to radical hospitality. To be "created to be like God" means reclaiming our original identity as Beloved.
Putting on the new self is an act of resistance. It’s choosing empathy when the world demands outrage. It’s choosing justice when the status quo is easier. It’s recognizing that the "Presence of Christ" isn't a historical artifact, but a living energy we embody every time we choose love over fear.
Questions for Reflection:
- What "old garment" or way of thinking (like judgment, anxiety, or the need for control) is feeling particularly heavy or ill-fitting for you lately?
- What is one small, practical way you can "put on" the new self this week to show more compassion to yourself or your community?
Prayer:
Holy One, The One who is making all things new, help us to let go. Gently peel away the layers of ego, bitterness, and apathy that we’ve used as armor. Remind us that we are already enough, and give us the courage to dress ourselves in your light. May our minds be renewed and our hearts be opened to the radical beauty of your grace. Amen.
