2 Thessalonians 1:11-12
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to have a special power? Super strength, the ability to fly, read minds, be invisible, the power to move things with your mind, being able to eat all the chocolate (or donut holes) you want without any negative results? The Bible tells us that God wants to give us special powers! Powers to do good things for Him.
God chose you, and we keep praying that God will make you worthy of being his people. We pray for God's power to help you do all the good things you hope to do and your faith makes you want to do. Then, because of the undeserved grace of God and our Lord Jesus Christ, you will bring honor to the name of our Lord Jesus, and he will bring honor to you. 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 (CEV)
Paul's words to the Thessalonians are a beautiful example of a prayer that goes beyond simple requests for daily needs. He is praying for their spiritual maturity and for a life that brings honor and glory to God. Paul's prayer acknowledges that it is God's power, not our own, that makes us worthy of this high and holy purpose. We are to seek God’s power in our lives in order to accomplish good works and fulfill our faith.
God promises to be with us, to give us strength and power, and to help us with all things. When we endure hardship with grace, when our faith and trust remains even in the storm, the name of Jesus is glorified. People see something in us. They see the power of God working in a our life. When we choose to be kind, helpful, honest, or forgiving, we're showing the world that we are His children. When we use God's power to do good, people will see and it gives us a chance to tell others about Jesus! Our good actions help others see how amazing He is. However, it's not just our big, dramatic actions that matter, but also our inner desires for goodness—the quiet thoughts and intentions to do what is right.
The great news is that God promises to give us His power! We are called to reflect the character of Christ in a fallen world. Our special power, that comes from God, is to do good, to love and to care for others. We are to show our love to others through our words and actions, living a life the way Christ lived. Even our smallest acts of kindness, when done in faith, are significant to God. Living this way shows that we are worthy of His calling.
Questions for Reflection:
- What does it mean to you to be "worthy of his calling"?
- Have you asked God for His power to help you do good things?
- How can your life today, in both big and small ways, glorify the name of Jesus?
Prayer:
Dear God, Thank you for calling us to be your children. Thank you for your love and grace. Thank you for promising to give us your power, power to fulfill every good purpose and every act prompted by faith. Help us to bring honor to your name through our words and actions so that others may know how wonderful you are. Amen
