Psalm 96:3
Each fall, all members of the church are asked to reflect on how we can each share our time and resources during the following calendar year. I can only speak for our family, but our first conversation is to recognize the obvious and have an open dialogue about what sort of monetary gifts we feel comfortable sharing. Each congregation sets an operating budget, and without people taking the time to share their anticipated commitment, it’s challenging to establish realistic expectations so as to be purposeful stewards of those resources for the coming year. My wife and I will make that choice this week and communicate our decision using either the paper card or updating it online.
Once we make that decision, our thoughts transition to sharing our time and talent. Today’s verse from Psalm 96 helps guide me when deciding how and why I share my time.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples. Psalm 96:3 (NRSVUE)
My son, Bradyn, and I both love to sing. We participate in the Men's Chorus and Mixed Chorus together, and Bradyn will do a solo from time to time. It’s a pleasure to be led and surrounded by so many talented people sharing the word of God through music. God has blessed us with writers and composers whose texts and arrangements touch our hearts and minds each Sunday morning. Their anthems declare God‘s glory and call on all of us to spread the good news of Christ in our lives. There is always room in the loft for more choir members, so please consider joining us when you are able!
The last way I give of my time is to write these devotions. I’ve been writing for over a decade, which has turned into a chronological history of our growing family. Sharing how God has guided and loved us over the years has been meaningful to me and hopefully occasionally relatable to those who read my reflections. Consider this an invitation to write and share your perspective if that is where God’s calling you to share your time.
In the end, God loves us all. It doesn’t matter if we jump in feet first by joining the choir or if we take two minutes to simply say hello and welcome to somebody new over a coffee. God is at work in all of us, so take a moment to thank Him for the gifts he’s giving you. Amen.
Questions for Reflection:
- How do you share the word of God in your life?
- Is there a new calling tugging at your heart that you’ve been considering adding to your time?
Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for blessing all of us with a myriad of talents. May we all find ways to share them in your name. Amen.
