Isaiah 27:6

The time is coming when Jacob’s descendants will take root. Israel will bud and blossom and fill the whole earth with fruit! Isaiah 27:6 (NLT)

It is fairly easy for us to make a promise, but how good are you at keeping a promise? You may have the best intentions but life is unpredictable and you may be unable to keep your promise due to things beyond your control. We live in a world that is unpredictable and feels unsafe in so many ways. As we look around, we see broken promises littering the landscape.

Today’s scripture is a great promise from God given to us by the prophet Isaiah many years ago. God is promising that He will protect and care for His people - not just Israel, but throughout the whole world. When we study the Old Testament and the history of Israel, we see that God has done just that. Most certainly Israel has faced huge challenges but God has kept His promise - He has protected and cared for them. In light of what is happening in Israel today, which seems impossibly difficult, we must rely upon the promise of God that He will care for them and protect them in this crisis. Israel won’t be in this fight alone. This scripture verse from Isaiah is very timely. We can put our trust in God’s promise to Israel. He keeps His promises to His people. Psalm 121:4 states, “He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. The LORD is thy keeper.” That is a good promise to cling to in times of uncertainty.

Another scripture that seemed appropriate to include at this time is Psalm 122:6-8. “Pray for peace in Jerusalem, May all that love this city prosper. O Jerusalem, may there be peace within you walls, and prosperity in your palaces. For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, ‘May you have peace.’ “

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do you find it hard to trust someone that has broken a promise to you?
  • Where have you seen a promise that God has kept to His people?

Prayer:

Good and Gracious God,
Thank you for Your promises that You have give us as recorded in the Bible. Today we are broken-hearted for our brothers and sisters in Israel and throughout the world where there is war and hate. Help us to remember to cling to Your promises during this difficult time. Bring healing to our land. In Jesus’ name, Amen
