1 John 5:1-5

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.  This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out His commands.  In fact, this is love for God: to keep His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:1-5 (NIV)

"And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, and they'll know we are Christians by our love." It is not always easy to love others, sometimes it feels impossible. Sometimes it feels impossible that God would still love me when things go awry and I don't follow His word, but He does, He always does. I often am in awe of the gifts He gives, without asking anything more than to have faith in Him. So now, in these days of turbulence, upside down values, pressures of the world turning our heads, I try very hard every day to "love the children of God," knowing that all are His children. I don't always succeed, but it is certainly the goal.

I have watched a television show called, "What Would You Do?" It is a hidden camera show where they set up sometimes ridiculous scenarios and film normal everyday people responding to less than savory things happening in their surroundings. It can be total silliness for sure, but I appreciate that what they televise very often has folks responding and reacting in ways that show love and caring for people who are not necessarily like them, but still they wish for them to be treated with respect, and will sacrifice their own comfort to say or do something to hopefully make the situation better. It helps restore my faith in people.

Truly His commands are not burdensome, for if we obey his commands it will actually make our lives better, easier, more productive and certainly more loving. I will keep trying, and failing, and trying again, every day, to be the kind of person who shows my love to All.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Has there been a time in life when you felt you should show love for someone who seemed unlovable?
  • Are there times when someone shows love to you when you don't feel you deserve it? How did that make you feel?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank you for bringing me into this world as Your child. Help me to show Your love to others. Help me to let others know You. Praise and honor to you, Lord Jesus Chris. Amen
