Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you: I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 (NRSUE)
Have you ever had to do something before you thought you were ready? Maybe take a test before you had studied enough or start participating in a job when your training was not yet complete? Perhaps experiencing the first night of being in a play compared to the last night of the play’s run? Or what about when you bring your newborn baby home for the first night? All of these instances might have you praying to God to be with you because you felt you were not quite ready.
This was how Jeremiah felt when God first called him to speak to the people of Judah. God had repeatedly warned Israel to turn away from their idolatrous ways, but they did not listen. It was then that God advised Jeremiah he was to give Judah the last warning, and Jeremiah was only 17 at the time. So it was not surprising that Jeremiah responded he did not know how to speak because he was only a boy. He was afraid of what God was calling him to do.
But God knew the plans he had for Jeremiah. Much like a potter who knows what he intends to make before setting down to the potter’s wheel, God intended for Jeremiah to be a prophet. God told Jeremiah not to be afraid.
How amazing it is to have the assurance that God knows of us even before we are born? I am encouraged that God is with me every step of the way in this lifetime. He knew of his plan for me before I was born and takes each step with me day after day.
Questions for Reflection:
- How does it make you feel to know that God had plans for you before you were born?
- How do we trust God daily to be the master planner in our lives?
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for loving us so much that you have a master plan for our lives even before we are born. Thank you for being with us in our daily walk with you. Amen
