John 14:1-3

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. John 14:1-3 (NIV)

We’re in the Advent season, and this is the time of year we’re told to prepare for Christ’s coming. The shopping, wrapping, decorating, baking and all can take over our lives pretty quickly. Holiday burnout can overwhelm us rapidly, and some of us can’t wait for the holidays to be over. Jesus is telling his disciples not to worry, He’s got it all handled. This is just after Jesus washed the disciples’ feet and predicted Peter’s betrayal. Jesus is also saying He is going to prepare a place for them and will return to bring them to be with Him and the Father. Wow, those are some preparations! Do you think maybe we should prepare ourselves to accept Jesus’ promises to be with Him and not worry about earthly holiday preparations as much? How do we prepare ourselves to be with Jesus? What activities prepare us? Jesus wants us to show love to others. Instead of spending our time planning for a holiday, maybe we could spend some time making sure people in our lives and just outside of our lives have enough food or companionship. People around us may or may not let us know what they need or want (unlike most kids who make extensive Christmas present lists!) so we need to pay attention to all those around us. Many folks are willing to donate during the holiday season, but what about after, in January or February? Can we still be preparing for Christ’s coming in those months? Other ways we can prepare ourselves could include maintaining good relationships with worship and fellowship. Both of these activities keep us focused on God’s Word, which then helps us live our lives a little more untroubled, like Jesus wants. Untroubled lives are also a good way to show others how to enjoy all times of the year, but especially now! Enjoy your life during this Advent season, courtesy of the promises of Jesus!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Can you think of some different way to prepare yourself this Advent season?
  • Are there some areas you can cut back to allow yourself to be available to those around you?

Prayer:

Jesus, you have promised to prepare a place for us, so we can be there with you. Help us prepare ourselves this Advent season to show everyone that your promises can change lives.  Keep us focused until that time You return. In Your name, Amen.

Their daughter, Julie, and her husband David Masciale are also members of Southwood.
