Hebrews 6:17-20

In the same way, when God desired to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it by an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus, a forerunner on our behalf, has entered, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 6:17-20 (NRSVUE)

First of all, the idea that God must prove something to us seems crazy! God in his infinite wisdom must have known that we as humans would be doubters. So in this passage, God gave us a promise (a statement that he will do something) and an oath (a formal declaration), so that we know he could not be proven false. By this promise and oath we can be assured that God is trustworthy, even when we may be doubters.

Have you ever had a time when you were struggling or doubting? I have had many times in my life that I have doubted, only to look back to see that God was at work, even when I could not see it at the time. We can have confidence, even in our times of doubt that God will always be faithful and trustworthy.

We can use this confidence and hope to be an anchor for our soul. Just as an anchor holds a boat in place, God’s promise can be a stabilizing force in our lives. Jesus entered the Kingdom of God to pave a way for us. Unlike the high priest of the time that could only enter the inner shrine behind the curtain one time a year to be in God’s presence, Jesus is always in God’s presence. He can be our anchor in times of trials.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Think about a time when you have faced a trial in your life. As you look back, where can you now see God at work?
  • How does your outlook on future trials feel different when you think about Jesus being your anchor?

Prayer:

God, you are the anchor in my life. I ask for your guidance in times of trial, so that Your will be done. Even when I doubt You Lord, remind me of Your promise and oath that You will never leave me.
