Genesis 1:26-31
“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’ Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.’ And it was so. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Genesis 1:26-31 (NIV)
When you got up this morning and looked in the mirror, was your first thought, “Wow, what a beautiful creation of God I am”? Yeah, me neither. More likely, it was, “Geez, how did this happen?” Then begins the never-ending task of grooming, armed with all the products and potions that promise to “fix” me.
The verses above are a beautiful reminder of just how carefully we were created and the important role we play on this earth. We are so much more than a good or bad hair day, a few extra pounds, or whatever flaw we may see when we look in the mirror.
We did not evolve from other life forms. We were deliberately created by God to represent Him on the earth and to have dominion over the rest of His creation. He gave us purpose! We are called to reflect His character, His love, His creativity, and His goodness in all that we do.
Questions for Reflection:
- Why do we allow materialism and impossible beauty standards to define our worth rather than remembering that we were intentionally created in His image?
- Do you take time to appreciate what a masterpiece each living thing is?
Prayer:
Dear God,
When I feel discouraged or wonder if I matter, remind me of my worth. When I forget just how spectacular Your creation is, show me again. May worldly standards slip away so that I can focus on You and the purpose You have given me. Help me to be a good steward of my body, my mind, and this earth. Amen.
