Expanding the Foundation
“The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials. So Pharaoh asked them, ‘Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?’ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders.’” Genesis 41:37–40 (RSV)
Have you been in a situation where something needs to be done and someone says, “Hey, what about you?” Was your immediate response, “I could never do that,” or “There is someone way better than me for that job.” God does not merely strengthen what already exists in our lives—He expands it by creating opportunities for us to grow. Joseph had spent years in hidden places, under pressure, waiting in preparation. And when the appointed time came, God brought him into a larger assignment than he had ever experienced before.
That is how God works with us. Currently I am expanding the Foundation I oversee. This means new responsibilities, involving more people, making ‘what is’ even better. It can feel slow, uncertain, yet exciting. While you may not be working for a Foundation, we are all working to build the foundation of who we are. We are laying one brick at a time, wondering if it matters. Genesis 41 reminds us that God knows what is being built beneath the surface. He is not only interested in where we are now, but in whether our foundation can carry what He is preparing to place upon it.
Joseph’s promotion did not come because he forced a door open. It came because God had formed character, wisdom, and faithfulness in him long before the opportunity arrived. In the same way, when you are seeking to expand the person you are (your foundation), God is working in both the visible and invisible parts of your life. He is deepening your trust, strengthening your discipline, and enlarging your capacity. To expand your foundation means to make room for more of what God wants to do through you. It may require more humility, more patience, more prayer, more consistency, more dependence on God. And that is not easy!
If you are working to expand your foundation today, do not despise or deny the process. God may have plans for you beyond your imagination or expectation. What feels small now may become the platform for something far beyond you. A quote on my business card is my reminder of this: “A society grows great when old men (and women) plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit it.” In other words, when God knocks on your door offering you opportunities exceeding your perceived abilities, know that “He’s got you.” Smile, act and serve. Create some shade.
Questions for Reflection:
- What part of your foundation is God strengthening before He expands your assignment?
- How do you “Let Go” and “Let God?”
Prayer:
Lord, Strengthen my foundation so it can hold what You want to place in my life. Give me Joseph’s spirit of humility, discernment, and trust. Teach me to welcome Your process, even when it is slow or overwhelming and prepare me for the greater purpose You have planned. Expand me in ways that glorify You. Amen.
