Mark 10:46–52
“Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means ‘son of Timaeus’), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him.’ So they called to the blind man, ‘Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.’ Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked him. The blind man said, ‘Rabbi, I want to see.’ ‘Go,’ said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.” Mark 10:46–52 (NIV)
He Hears You
Have you ever felt like you were calling out for help, but no one truly heard you?
Maybe you’ve prayed about the same situation over and over. You’ve asked God for healing, direction, peace, or an answer, but nothing seems to change. After a while, it can become easy to wonder whether God is listening—or whether your need even matters to Him.
Bartimaeus probably understood that feeling. He was blind, sitting beside the road and begging while everyone else passed him by. People may have seen him every day, but they probably stopped really noticing him.
Then Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was passing by.
He couldn’t see Jesus, but he believed Jesus could see him. So he began shouting, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
The people around him told him to be quiet. They made him feel like he was being too loud, too needy, or too much of a disruption. But Bartimaeus knew this might be his opportunity to reach Jesus, so he shouted even louder.
Sometimes the voices telling us to be quiet don’t come from other people. Sometimes they come from within us.
God has more important things to worry about.
You’ve already prayed about this enough.
Nothing is going to change.
Maybe you should just give up.
But Bartimaeus reminds us that we don’t have to let discouragement silence our faith. We can keep calling out to Jesus, even when we are tired, frustrated, or unsure of what He will do.
And then something beautiful happened: Jesus stopped.
Out of everyone in that crowd, Jesus heard Bartimaeus. He wasn’t annoyed by his cries, and He didn’t ignore him. Jesus stopped and called him forward.
The same is true for us. Jesus is never too busy for our prayers. We are never lost in the crowd to Him. He sees the struggles we don’t talk about, the worries we carry quietly, and the prayers we’re almost afraid to pray again.
When Jesus called him, Bartimaeus threw aside his cloak, jumped to his feet, and came to Him. That cloak may have represented his security and the life he had always known. But Bartimaeus was willing to leave it behind because he believed an encounter with Jesus could change everything.
Then Jesus asked, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
Jesus already knew Bartimaeus was blind, but He still invited him to express what he needed. God wants us to be honest with Him too. We don’t have to use perfect words or pretend we’re stronger than we are. We can tell Him exactly where we’re hurting, what we’re afraid of, and what we desperately need.
Bartimaeus simply said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”
Jesus healed him, and immediately Bartimaeus followed Jesus along the road. He didn’t just receive his miracle and walk away. His answered prayer brought him closer to Jesus and gave his life a new direction.
Maybe you’re currently waiting for an answer. Maybe you feel overlooked, discouraged, or exhausted from carrying something for too long. This story reminds us not to give up.
Keep calling out to Jesus. He hears you. He sees you. Your need matters to Him. His answer may not come exactly when or how you expect it, but you are never ignored and never alone.

- What have you been praying about that has left you feeling discouraged or unheard?
- What thoughts or fears have been tempting you to give up?
- If Jesus asked you, “What do you want Me to do for you?” What would you honestly say?
- Is there something you need to let go of so you can trust and follow Him more fully?
Prayer:
Jesus, sometimes I feel tired of waiting and wonder if You truly hear me. Thank You for reminding me that I am never invisible to You. You see what I’m carrying, even when no one else does. Help me continue calling out to You when I feel discouraged. Give me the courage to be honest about what I need and the faith to trust You with the answer. Help me release anything that is holding me back, open my eyes to Your presence, and follow You wherever You lead.
