Year in the Bible Daily Reading:
Genesis 12-15; Psalm 148; Mark 5 Listen to Today's Reading
Mark 5
I have to admit; it can be a bit hard for me to read about Jesus giving new life to Jairus’s daughter. Oh, how I long that my son may have had a new life (he too was 12), but then I think; well, he received something even better - eternal life fully healed and in paradise with Jesus himself. But still, why then?
Even now, I watch and wait (while also cherishing our time together, both past and present) for cancer to take my mom from our world, and I know that God could heal her here on earth, just like he did the bleeding lady, with a mere, unintentional (on his part) touch. So why doesn’t he? The Lord knows we have prayed for it for 10 years now.
The thing is; we are not meant to necessarily understand God’s will or actions, but we are to know that they are good. Just like I can’t fully understand why Jesus allowed the demons to enter the pigs in the healing of the demon-possessed man. Was it necessary that all those pigs had to die? And did that create a food shortage for the people of the area? It most certainly was a huge loss of income for the owner of the pigs. I do not understand, but I can make peace with my lack of understanding in knowing that it was used for His Good, someway, somehow.
In the three examples in today’s reading, Jesus is demonstrating his authority over all things hard and scary. Showing us just how mighty and unlimited God’s authority is; commanding of demons, mightier than sickness, and more powerful than death. Nothing is too much for our God. No moment or circumstance is ever hopeless. Even though we may not understand, God is good - ALL THE TIME!
Questions for Reflection:
- Are you wrestling with understanding something right now? Can you turn it over to God and just trust he’s got it all under control?
- Can you remember something in the past that you didn’t understand at the time, but in hindsight, God has gifted you the knowledge of something good that came from it?
- Do you feel empowered to face whatever comes your way, knowing that although it may seem scary to you, nothing scares our Lord and He’s got your back?
Prayer:
Good and gracious God, Heavenly Father, Commander, Healer, and Savior,
Thank you for reminding me of your authority over all things and that, because you are always in control, I do not have to worry. I know there is a lot I will never understand, but I trust you. Thank you for your goodness and love, always. I love you too. In Jesus name, Amen.
