The Southwood-Tanzania Education Scholarship program is a partnership of Southwood Lutheran and the Northern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania. Together we provide students opportunities in secondary and post-secondary education and vocational training.
Southwood employs a program coordinator in Tanzania to be the administrator and advisor to the 100 or more students in 11 Secondary Schools and 30 Colleges or Universities.
One of the biggest challenges to secondary school education is the switch from their native Swahili language to English. Private schools are better equipped for teaching in the English language but are costly. So for many children in Tanzania, education ends with primary school graduation. Families living in extreme poverty are not able to afford to send their children to secondary school. Many children begin working at a young age instead of continuing their education.
Our scholarship program offers students an opportunity to attend a good school and build a better future for themselves. They live & study at their school. Focusing on school without the distraction of financial worries enables them to be better learners.
A Southwood Tanzania Education Scholarship provides students with tuition, room & board, uniforms, personal supplies and health insurance. The Scholarship Program also offers students personal development opportunities with a life skills course for graduates and a yearly student assembly. In 2020, a feminine health and hygiene program for girls was started.
