Matthew 12:25

Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. Matthew 12:25 (NIV)

Twenty-three years ago today on September 11, 2001, and the weeks following, was a time in America that I have felt the most unity among everyone in the country. People’s political differences did not matter, everyone was united. People worked side by side to help the nation grieve, recover, and come out of a horrific situation more united.

It is hard to fathom that 23 years later, I feel like this nation is possibly the most divided it has been in my lifetime. People are divided on all kinds of issues and with the help of social media algorithms, this division keeps deepening. In this scripture, Jesus warns us about this very situation. “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined”. How do we get back the unity of 23 years ago? I pray it does not take another 9/11 for us to put our differences aside and come together as a nation.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do my thoughts and actions promote unity or divisiveness?
  • How can I do my part to promote unity in my family and nation?
  • If Jesus knows my thoughts, is that scary or reassuring?

Prayer:

Uniting God, we may not always agree with our neighbors, but guide us to allow our differences to unite us in peace and unity. We pray for guidance to learn from each other's differences to help us stand together, united in our love for You and others. Amen.
