Colossians 3:16
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Colossians 3:16 (NIV)
Paul was encouraging Christians to sing the praises of God. That is what we do in church every Sunday and often, several days in between. I personally do my best to sing. Church is one place I feel comfortable trying to contribute to the joy of knowing Christ.
When I was in junior high, our choir director kindly asked me to leave the choir. Apparently, my lack of talent was screwing up the rest of the choir. It was not because I was misbehaving. That was not something I did. I have never forgotten that embarrassing incident. So, I enjoy trying to contribute to the love of Christ by singing with the congregation at church. I have decided that my fellow parishioners are doing their best to sing too and probably don’t care whether I can carry a tune or not! The fact that our church has wonderful music contributes to my joy and encourages my attendance. What a way to honor God!
As we sing the words to our well-chosen songs, we are teaching each other and gaining understanding of happiness related to knowing Christ. When a choir and/or soloists are part of worship, they are teaching us the joy of being a Christian. It seems to me that Southwood Lutheran does a great job of fulfilling Paul’s admonishment to sing to God! I will continue to make my contribution to the music, whether on or off key!
Questions for Reflection:
- Do you enjoy singing in church? If not, why not?
- Do you find our church music uplifting as we honor Christ? Explain, why or why not!
Prayer:
Dear Jesus, hear my songs as I do my best to sing. I may not always be in tune with everyone else, but my heart is in my effort. I love honoring you through music so, help me to be joyful as I sing. In Christ’s name I pray,
Amen
