Philippians 4:7
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 (NIV)
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
I have several friends that are suffering from cancer, and I am in awe of their inner peace. These two verses may explain why. God’s grace and power are sufficient for all our needs, and his peace, which we cannot fully understand, will guard us in our troubles. What comfort these verses can be to those who suffer.
The peace referenced in Philippians gives us a feeling of inner calm and tranquility that we can experience even in difficult times. This peace doesn’t come from everything working out according to our desires, but it comes from knowing that no matter what life throws at us we can still find some level of comfort and acceptance. Deep down inside, we know that our victory is in Jesus Christ and not in our earthly circumstances. Remembering this may be easy, but some days it is just hard to put into practice. Thanks to the Holy Spirit who intervenes in our lives to give us needed strength.
Taking our needs to God, we open ourselves to truly experiencing God’s grace in transformative ways. In the song “Until Grace,” Tauren Wells sings, “I didn’t know I would be free until grace found me.” God’s love shines brightest in our weakness. Do you sense God’s presence in your vulnerability?
Through our faith life, we will encounter rough roads through physical, emotional, spiritual, or relational hardships. Have you ever experienced a sense of calm in a situation that imposed a high level of stress and worry? The verse from 2 Corinthians teaches us that God’s grace is sufficient for our needs when we lean into the hardships we face. God empowers us as we pray to give us strength to face our challenges that can seem insurmountable. When friends have asked me what they can do for me in times of trouble, I tell them prayer is the greatest gift they can give. Southwood’s prayer chain supports those who experience hardships by raising up the prayers of many of our members.
Whatever you are facing today, trust that God is with you in your journey. His peace and grace are meeting you right where you are. Call on him to find the strength you need to persevere. He is waiting and listening.
Prayer:
Father in Heaven, thank you for your grace and mercy that you freely give to us. Everyday your presence nourishes and blesses us. We humbly bow before you with thanksgiving. In your name we pray. Amen
