Ephesians 5:15–17

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 5:15–17 (NIV)

Every day, we make hundreds of choices—some big, some small. What time to get up, what to prioritize, how to respond when things don’t go our way. Paul’s words in Ephesians remind us that how we live matters deeply. He challenges us to walk wisely and intentionally, not wasting the moments God gives us but using them to bring light, purpose, and joy into the world.

“Be very careful, then, how you live.” This isn’t about walking on eggshells or being afraid of mistakes. It’s about living aware—not drifting through days on autopilot. The unwise stumble through life distracted or consumed by the temporary, but the wise understand that every day is a gift and every decision can bring us closer to God’s plan.

When Paul says, “make the most of every opportunity,” he’s urging us to live with urgency and purpose. The world can easily pull us toward busyness, comparison, or complacency. But wisdom calls us to slow down, seek God’s will, and recognize what truly matters—loving people, serving well, and growing closer to Christ.

Understanding God’s will doesn’t mean having every answer. It’s more about aligning our hearts with His—being open to His prompting, faithful in small things, and quick to respond with obedience. When we live like that, even ordinary moments become sacred.

Questions for Reflection:

  • In what areas of your life do you tend to move on autopilot rather than living intentionally?
  • How can you use your time and energy this week to reflect God’s wisdom and purpose?
  • What helps you recognize God’s will when you’re unsure of your next step?

Prayer:

Lord, help me to walk wisely today. Teach me to see each moment as an opportunity to honor You. When I’m tempted to rush or react, remind me to pause and seek Your will. Give me a heart that chooses what matters most—loving You and loving others. Thank You for the time and purpose You’ve given me. Amen.
