Proverbs 30:7-9

"Two things I ask of You, O Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal and so dishonor the name of my God." Proverbs 30:7-9 (NIV)

This passage comes from the sayings of Agur, a lesser-known figure in the Bible, but one of deep humility and wisdom. Agur acknowledges human weakness and prays for protection from the temptations that come with both wealth and poverty. This passage teaches believers to seek truth, practice contentment, and rely on God for daily needs, ultimately bringing honor to His name.

In our country, as well as in many others, wealth inequality is vast. Some have far more than they need, while others struggle daily, mirroring the contrast Agur warns about. God calls His people to care for the poor and pursue justice. Agur’s prayer reminds us to seek balance—avoiding both greed and desperation.

In a world dominated by misinformation, social media manipulation, and personal branding, honesty can be rare. People often exaggerate or distort the truth to gain success, approval, or power. Many are tempted to present a false version of themselves online, curating images of perfection while hiding struggles. In business and politics, deception is often normalized. Long ago  Mom taught me the following poem to remind me that integrity and fairness matter. Living truthfully—whether in personal relationships, at work, or online—reflects God’s character.

So give me, Lord, my daily need.
No more, no less, just what is right.
Contentment be my greatest wealth,
And truth my ever-guiding light.

For riches fade, and hunger pains,
But You, O God, forever stay.
Let neither pride nor want betray.
Just keep me walking in Your way.

Question for Reflection:

  • Do you trust God with what you have, or do you strive for more out of fear or pride?

Prayer:

Lord, help me be content. Provide what I need today and teach me to trust You for tomorrow. Father, keep my heart dependent on You, whether in plenty or in need. Let neither pride nor desperation pull me from Your presence. Amen

Travel is a big part of my life due to having a bi-coastal family and the nature of my work with Mentors, a global foundation. As members of Southwood Lutheran since 1978, the Mecham kids were blessed to grow up in a strong, loving, fun church family, the likes of which they seek in Durham, Los Angeles, and Kansas City. Four grand-blessings (from Guatemala, Ethiopia and North Carolina) bring endless joy whether near or far.
