10Jun

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4 (NIV)

Ok…pop quiz. Draw a picture of the Holy Spirit.

What did you end up with? Flames? Lightbulbs? A gust of wind? A flame thrower? Is it a wind, an idea? Does it live above us, in us, around us? In this lesson we are presented with the strange, yet awe struck event of the moment when the Holy Spirit is brought to the disciples. The disciples were all together in a room when they heard a strong wind, like a giant fan blowing. Then, they saw something even cooler – tongues of fire, like little flames, landing on each of their heads. The Holy Spirit filled them, and they suddenly started speaking in languages they didn't know before! It was like God gave them a special gift to speak to people from all over the world.

Jesus had done what he had promised and brought the disciples the Holy Spirit and he did the same for us. Now most of us have probably never experienced wind and fire, however, that does sound like a typical Nebraska weather day. But God gives us the Holy Spirit to go out in the world.

He brings us the Holy Spirit in the form of wind. We can’t see the wind, but we can see its movement and its potential power in every moving tree or blowing kite.

He brings us the Holy Spirit in the form of a flame we can’t necessarily see but we can feel His influence on our heart and in our life. He helps us make good choices and do things that please God.

He brings us the Holy Spirit to share his word to everyone we meet. No matter the language or situation, he gives us the words to share and the stories to tell others that they may know Him.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What are ways you see the Holy Spirit blowing like wind through your life?
  • How does the flame of the Holy Spirit empower you to do good in the world?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, grant us the strength and courage that Your Spirit brings. Empower us to live out our faith boldly.
