Psalm 24:7-10
Open up, O ancient gates, and let the King of Glory in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, invincible in battle. Yes, open wide the gates and let the King of Glory in. Who is this King of Glory? The Commander of all of heaven’s armies! Psalm 24:7-10 (TLB)
Written a thousand years before Jesus was born, by King David under the influence of the Holy Spirit, this text is a song of praise and a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Jesus himself even referenced the prophecy when he told his disciples that what is written in the Psalms points to him in Luke 24:25-27, 44-47.
I think today we too can read this text and still find it pertinent as we wait for God to return to earth on the day of reconning. As I read this text, the song “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe came to mind. The first couple verses go as follows:
“I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk by Your side
I can only imagine
What my eyes would see
When Your face is before me
I can only imagine
Yeah
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel?
Will I dance for You, Jesus?
Or in awe of You, be still?
Will I stand in Your presence?
Or to my knees, will I fall?
Will I sing hallelujah?
Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine
I can only imagine…”
You can listen to the full song here.
The King of Glory is coming. Will we be ready?
Let (keep) God into your heart and all His strength and glory will be with you. You can do all things with “The Lord, strong and mighty, invincible in battle” on your side.
Questions for Reflection:
- We don’t know what it will be like when we meet God face to face. We can only imagine. What can we do now to feel confident and excited for that meeting?
- Do you believe God’s love can conquer all?
Prayer:
King of Glory, strong and mighty, invincible in battle, Commander of all of heaven’s armies, please fill my heart with Your peace that I may know you are always on my side. Help me to listen like David when the Holy Spirit nudges me, and may I look forward to the day that we meet face to face. In your name I pray, Amen.
