Romans 11:1-6

Ever feel like you’re the only one left trying? Like you’re the last person in your office, your family, or your friend group who actually cares about following Jesus? If so, you’re in good company.

In Romans 11:1-6, Paul addresses a heavy question: Has God given up on His people? It’s a moment of deep insecurity for the early church, and Paul’s answer is a resounding, "Absolutely not!"

Paul points to himself as Exhibit A. He’s an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham—if God were done with Israel, Paul wouldn't be standing there. But then he brings up Elijah, and this is where it gets relatable. Elijah was stressed, burned out, and convinced he was the only faithful person left on the planet. He literally told God, "I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me."

God’s response to Elijah (and to us) is a gentle but firm reality check: "I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal."

The big takeaway here is the concept of the “remnant.” Paul explains that even when things look bleak, there is always a group chosen by grace.

Here’s the kicker, and it’s the most important part of the passage: It’s all about grace. Paul writes, "And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace."

What a relief. Our standing with God (and the fact that He keeps a "remnant" at all) isn't because we are the smartest, most faithful, or most "together" people in the room. It’s because God is relentless in His pursuit of us. You don’t have to carry the weight of being the "perfect" Christian to keep the faith alive. God is the one doing the keeping.

When you feel alone in your faith, remember that you are part of a much larger, grace-sustained family that spans the globe and throughout history. You aren't the last one left; you’re just one part of God’s beautiful, grace-filled "reserved" list.

Questions for Reflection:

  • When do we feel most "alone" in our faith, and how does the reality of God's "remnant" change that perspective?
  • Are we ever tempted to believe our standing with God is based on our hard work rather than His grace? How can we release that pressure today?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for being the one who holds onto me, even when I feel like I'm losing my grip. Forgive me for the times I think it all depends on my effort or my "works." Thank You for the gift of grace that keeps me and for the reminder that I am never truly alone in following You. Help me to rest in Your choice and Your goodness today. Amen.
