Acts 12:12-17

When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.  Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.  When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”  “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”  But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.  Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place. Acts 12:12-17 (NIV)

There is joy in what once was, the nostalgia of it all.
Being the person your family and friends expect you to be.
There is joy in what’s to come, the anticipation of it all.
There’s astonishment in becoming your own person.
The loss of who they once believed you were.
There’s astonishment in branching out and learning.
There’s wisdom in experiences, growing through it all.
Better understanding where we came from and who we are.
There’s wisdom in truth, adding to it all.

For Reflection:

  • Our growth can’t be stifled because people believe we are the person we once were. Rhoda believing the same Peter who left was at the door is something that many people can learn from. We can’t hope that people who experience something life changing will come back as the person they were when they left.

Prayer:

Dear Lord,
Thank you for allowing us to grow and let those around us grow, learn and experience. And thank you for letting us share your word with those in our lives. We spend so much time learning from others and trying to better understand you because you have given us that chance. Lord, in your name, we pray. Amen.
