James 1:5-8

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. James 1:5-8 (NIV)

James 1:5-8 is a passage that directs Christians to enthusiastically seek God. It emphasizes the importance of relying on God and not wavering between God and the pressures and demands of the world.

James encourages us to seek wisdom through God, because as ourselves we are empty and hopeless. He explains that God freely provides wisdom to face life’s trials to all who come to him in prayer.

In the James writings, “wisdom” refers to the knowledge we need to endure and overcome our trials through God’s joy, so that we can be “perfect and complete, lacking in nothing”. James mentions that often in times of trials, we often do lack His wisdom on how to bear and process them with faith and optimism.

James ends by stating that if God commands something, and if God gives that gift generously - His wisdom, then we are to ask Him for it.

Questions for Reflection:

  • In times of trial, how do you normally react?
  • In these times of trial, do you actively seek Gods for wisdom?
  • If no to question 2, what obstacles get in the way of seeking His wisdom?
  • What actions and plans can you take to reduce or eliminate these obstacles and keep God primary?

Prayer:

Lord, help us keep aware of your offer to provide Your wisdom to us, especially in our time of trials. Help us keep your word and desires always on our mind and heart. Give us the fortitude to strengthen our bond with You in prayer and appreciation. Help us act with Your wisdom, and live in a way that brings glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
