2 Peter 3:17-18
Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. 2 Peter 3:17-18 (NIV)
In most phases of our lives, we work very hard to achieve a certain comfort level. We associate this with not having to worry about either our present situation or our future or both. And oftentimes we look forward to achieving that comfort level in some part of our lives, because that lets us focus on something else that may be problematic. And there is always something else. And it is always problematic.
When we achieve that comfort level that we are seeking, we often place those parts of our lives on the back burner so that we can focus on the problem areas. Sounds like a good plan, right? Many certainly would think so.
Now let’s look at things from a spiritual perspective. Many of us have worked very hard to bring our lives out of dark places and into the light, and we feel very secure in our spiritual life and in our relationship with God. And many of us who have been on that journey are dedicating time to walking with others in need and continue to serve God and our fellow brothers and sisters in need. We actively attend and participate in our church. We certainly have achieved a comfort level where we can now focus on other problems, right?
I don’t think so.
As much as it may be easy to do so, our relationship with God and our opportunities to serve should never be placed on the back burner, regardless of how comfortable we may feel. If we value God’s grace and His love for us, serving Him and meeting His expectations should always be “front burner” priorities.
In that light, as we start a new year, let’s put our focus on those “front burner” activities. Serve God. Love and walk with our brothers and sisters in need. Respond to the Holy Spirit’s nudges. Never stop looking for opportunities to make a difference. Never lose focus. And always keep God on the “front burner”.
It’s easier than we think.
Thanks be to God!
Questions for Reflection:
- Do you have parts of your life where you have achieved a comfort level?
- When you get that comfort level, does that part of your life go to the back burner?
- Is your spiritual life a “front burner” activity?
