Luke 15:1-7
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:1-7 (NIV)
In these verses, we see Jesus interacting with two distinct groups of people: the tax collectors and sinners, who were viewed as outcasts, and the Pharisees, who were the religious leaders of the time. This setting quickly outlines an important aspect of Jesus’ ministry: His willingness to associate with those rejected by society.
Tax collectors and sinners were drawn to Him. They felt comfortable enough to gather around Him and listen to His teachings. Jesus did not shy away from these individuals, highlighting His heart for the lost and marginalized.
The parable told by Jesus speaks greatly about God’s heart for us. The imagery of the shepherd and the lost sheep is powerful and acceptable. Many of us might have seen or experienced how easily we can stray from the right path or how valuable our presence is to the whole.
Over my life, I’ve now and then strayed but with God’s help I’ve strived to return to the right path.
The shepherd leaving the ninety-nine sheep to seek the one lost one portrays God’s unwavering commitment to each of us personally. It emphasizes the truth that everyone matters to God, no matter their past or sins. Ultimately, this parable paints a tremendous picture of God’s love and grace, showing us that no one is beyond redemption.
Questions for Reflection:
- Have you ever strayed away from the right path? Were you able to return to the right path, or are you still dealing with this?
- Do you feel God has an interest in you personally? Why or why not?
Prayer:
Lord, help us be constantly aware of Your love and care of each of us. Keep us diligent of the right path and give us the strength and will power to live and act as You desire. When we do stray from the right path, give us the strength and courage to change our ways and return to Your love and glory. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
