2 Samuel 22:17-20

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.  He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. 2 Samuel 22:17-20 (NIV)

As I am writing this, I am sitting at my 12-year-old son’s bedside as he (we) prepares for Jesus to take him Home. These verses bring me great comfort and could not have been put in front of me at a better time. I am reassured that, while this is difficult and painful, God will not let the grief consume me. He can and will carry me (us) through this, through the toughest of times, through the unimaginable. In fact, I can tangibly feel and see Him at work all around me (us) through our loving community reaching out in support, surrounding us in love, and taking action to lighten our load and in His words that seem to find their way to me each day at just the right time when I need to hear them most. To me these verses are a reminder that:

  • No matter how dark the place we are in may seem; God is light, and light will always win. He can and will pull us out of the deep waters.
  • God delights in us, and with his help, we can get through all things. He will always rescue us – we just have to be willing to let him.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have you felt God’s rescue from the deep waters?
  • Are you facing difficult times now? Do you find comfort in these verses?
  • Can you intentionally turn your focus to the Truth in the words God gave us to guide and reassure us? Try it.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Thank you for reaching down and taking hold of us in difficult times and rescuing us from deep waters, and thank you for the reminders and reassurance you send us when we start to lose sight of your Truth.  Always good and loving Father, thank you for your support and for your promise of eternal life - the One True Hope that will help us endure all things. In your name we pray, Amen.
