Proverbs 19:21

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)

Growing up, fasting during Lent wasn’t a “thing” at our Lutheran church. Forgive the old stereotype but I fuzzily remember it being “what the Catholics” did. Looking back, my vague understanding was that fasting was thought of as a punishment for sins. And the big thing they fasted from was meat. Which is why fish Fridays still linger.

Over time, it’s shifted to being more about giving up other things – like chocolate or ice cream. Anyone who’s heard me wax eloquently about my favorite brand of dark chocolate knows that would be a sacrifice on my part!

It is now about setting aside anything interfering in our relationship with God. Rather than punishment or repentance, it is a way for us to deepen our faith relationship - to draw us closer to God.

In the last few years, I’ve seen a movement to give up feelings or ideas vs actual “things”. I saw a meme on Facebook asking people to “keep the chocolate” but give up hatred, bigotry and judgement instead. What a great idea!

Let’s take it a step further – give up “busyness”. Ever get to the end of your day and wonder if you got anything done? You were running around all day but what did you accomplish? That is the feeling of “busyness” that many people (me included) get caught up in. Maybe it’s time to set aside our day planner with the deadlines and to-do lists. Maybe it’s time for us to just … be. To breathe and be still before God.

I challenge you to fast from busyness each day for the next week. Spend time in the present moment with God who loves you deeply. Every day, take just three minutes and do some deep breathing, not thinking about all you need to get done today but about how God loves you. Feel God’s presence, really let yourself be still before God.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I addicted to “busy”?

  • What can I give up after Lent to draw me closer to God?

  • Do I have three minutes to give to God today? Every day?

Prayer:

Help me draw closer to You, not just during Lent but every day of my life. Help me Lord be still before You. Amen.
