Acts 2:43-47
“Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:43-47 (NIV)
What a beautiful snapshot of the early church in the days following Pentecost! But one of my first thoughts upon reading this was, “Boy, have we strayed from that generous, communal spirit”. However, the more I reflected, the more I realized we are still a generous people. Seven days a week, 365 days a year, I guarantee you can find Southwood members serving others in some shape or form. So keep on keeping on, Southwood friends. Not only will the receivers of your gifts benefit greatly, you will too! According to multiple sources on trusty Google, giving can:
- release endorphins
- reduce stress and anxiety
- enhance self-esteem
- strengthen social connections
- lower blood pressure
- reduce mortality
A win-win all around!
Questions for Reflection:
- Are you giving what you’re able?
- If not, why not? (Keep in mind there are so many non-monetary ways to give too!)
Prayer:
Dear God, life is quite different now from the days of the early church. Sometimes we live on islands concerned only with ourselves. When that happens, bring us back to You and Your purpose for our lives. Help us to look outward. Thank you for all the wonderful believers who have made such a difference in the lives of others, including our own here at Southwood. Amen.
