Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NIV)
In today’s world, we hear this passage quite often. It is most often associated with celebration of life events, as it speaks directly to everything having its time and purpose.
But for those of you that grew up in the 1960s and early 1970s, this passage has a much different meaning. It is less associated with being a Bible passage and more directly associated with the popular anthem released in 1965 by the American rock group, the Byrds, called “Turn! Turn! Turn!”. This anthem was written by folk singer-songwriter Pete Seeger in 1959 and initially released in 1962.
This anthem symbolized the 1960s and the generation coming of age during that time. The world was filled with conflict, and countries and regions were at war to stop the spread of radical ideologies. The pendulum of social change was again swinging, and people of all ages were questioning both the norms and the new direction. It was a period of awakening and change for sure, and when this anthem achieved popularity, there was no certain future ahead.
For those of you that did not grow up in that time, what I have just described can very well sum up where our world is today. A time of war and conflict with radical ideologies and no peace in sight. A time of questioning norms and values. A time of social change. A time of polarizing politics. A time and a generation in need of purpose and direction.
Unlike the 1960s, technology and social media provide today’s generation with more sources of information, and unfortunately, more ways to be influenced. Everything is called into question and all opinions, thoughts and ideas challenged. There are no longer established norms or a respected path forward. And no apparent interest in getting there.
Also, no one appears to be willing to emerge from the chaos, step up, and lead by the type of example Jesus would set. This passage clearly states that all events and actions have a time and a purpose. Is there a time or purpose that is missing from the passage? A time that will make a difference? An opportunity to live with a purpose? I certainly think that there is.
Now is a time for God if I ever saw one.
Thanks be to God!
