Mark 10:13-16

One of the first blogs I wrote was in 2012 after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. I remember being parched and numbed by the tragic news. A vision came to me that day of Jesus sitting on a small chair like you would see in the children’s classrooms. One by one, each child walked to Jesus as he lovingly greeted them. The picture in my mind was of Jesus with large wings that each child took refuge under, like the safety of a mother swan sheltering her baby cygnets. Out of this most horrific act, peace engulfed each child as they met Jesus. Their faces showed the love and compassion they felt. The Kingdom belonged to them in that moment.

Thirteen years later, I was assigned Mark 10:13-16 (NIV) where Jesus said to his disciples: “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these…Jesus took the children in his arms, put his hand on them and blessed them.”

Time is irrelevant to Jesus. He was and is the same yesterday as he is today and will be tomorrow. How he blessed the little children in Mark has not changed. He is, he was, and he will always be loving and merciful. God’s love and mercy endure forever.

The “Kingdom of God belongs to such as these”; those who are humble in their faith and dependent on Him, which perfectly describes the innocence of children. Thanks be to God that we may find refuge under his wings of comfort and peace.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your presence in our lives. In our good times and in our bad times, may we turn to you and find refuge in your loving arms.
In your name we pray, Amen.
