Revelation 7:15-17

For this reason they are before the throne of God and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat, for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Revelation 7:15-17 (NIV)

I find the book of Revelation to be very confusing. Mythical beasts, cryptic numbers, lamp stands, sheep and goats - what does it all mean? Today’s verses, however, are clear. At the end of time, when I go to Heaven, I’ll be sheltered, fed, protected. Christ will be my shepherd, and God will wipe away all my tears. It paints a bright picture of my eventual reward.

I could focus on that perfect future nirvana. Don’t worry about today, just slog through this life on earth in anticipation of something so much better to come. Is that what Jesus wants from me?

We’ve been singing a hymn at the Lenten services that seems to contradict that approach to life.  It emphasizes being aware of and part of the present. The chorus goes:

I wanna be where my feet are
I wanna breathe the life around me
I wanna listen as my heart beats, right on time
I wanna be where my feet are

A few months ago, I had just finished my part of Sunday School (large group leader) and was heading upstairs to grab a snack. Church was still in progress and the café was quiet. I noticed a gentleman of my acquaintance sitting by himself at one of the tables. Ignoring the siren song of the donut holes, I sat down with him and learned that this was his first wedding anniversary since his wife had died and he was a little down. I didn’t offer any advice or platitudes, but just listened for a few minutes. It seemed to perk him up to have someone to share his story.

That’s what “being where my feet are” means to me. Stay in the present, be aware of what’s happening around me, and respond to a need. I am not always good at that. But music speaks to me, and maybe with this tune bouncing around in my head, I’ll remember to “be where my feet are.”

Questions for Reflection:

  • What music inspires you?
  • Is it leading you in the right direction?

Prayer

Lord, I’m thankful for the future promises in today’s verses. But I know you want more from me. Remind me to “be where my feet are” and focus my attention on the needs of others. Amen.
