Matthew 28:16-20

Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him – but some of them doubted! Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.  And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:16-20 (NLT)

Matthew 28 begins with Mary Madalene and the other Mary visiting Christ’s tomb. An angel of the Lord comes to them, rolls aside the stone on the tomb, sits on the stone, and shines brightly. The angel speaks to the women about Christ’s resurrection and then tells them to go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead and is going ahead of them to Galilee. As the women run to tell the disciples about what they have seen and heard, Jesus meets them. Then Jesus says to the women, “Don’t be afraid! Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee and they will see me there.” As the women, joyfully, go to find the disciples some of the guards went to the elders to share what had happened. This group of religious leaders began plotting how to cover up the truth of the Resurrection. Their story spread widely among the Jews.

The eleven disciples left for Galilee. I would think that the disciples had a lot of thoughts, questions, and discussions as they headed on this journey. To their joyful surprise, they see Jesus on the mountain in Galilee and worship him – even though some had their doubts. I infer that some had heard the stories told by the religious leaders which led to their doubts. But even with some doubts, Jesus goes on to tell them of the important work he wants them to do in his name – growing and teaching to all about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He gives this great commission to the disciples but not without his total support – “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Now that we have just journeyed through Lent and experienced the Easter story of resurrection and life, this church year, may we be recommissioned with joyful hearts (even if sometimes we have a few doubts) to continue as disciples of Christ by obeying, growing, and teaching about Christ to others and his offer of eternal life.

Questions for Reflection:

  • In what ways can I share my love of Christ with others?
  • Even if I have some doubts, how can I grow stronger in Christ’s word?

Prayer:

Risen Christ, Thank you for your sacrifice for us on the cross. Help us to grow in our faith in you and guide us in our evangelism to others. Amen
