Psalm 139:13-16

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV)

When my kids were in middle and high school, they belonged to a Christian youth group. They loved going to Tuesday group activity nights and camps in the summer. It helped that lots of their friends and classmates went too. At a time in kids’ lives when they most need to feel wanted and loved, this was a safe place for them to be themselves. Their mission statement was “You were created with a purpose and for a purpose.” I loved that my kids felt they had a purpose in life. I loved that my kids knew they were created for a purpose. I loved that God was with them from the beginning of their creation.

I have always been the type of person who believes that everything happens for a reason. If you slow down and think about moments and events in your life (big or small), you realize that God had a hand in all. You can relate every situation in your life as with a purpose and/or for a purpose. When the kids are at a crossroads in life, I always tell them, “God has a plan for you. You can relax and enjoy the journey ahead.” These are words I need to hear on occasion too as it is easy to create unnecessary worry about your future.

The psalmist, David, praises God for creating him from his “inmost being”. This reminds us of our worth and value; that God created us intentionally and that our lives have meaning and significance. So much of our worth in life is defined by external standards – education, finances, popularity, etc. As David states he is in awe of being one of God’s masterpieces, it is because of the core of who we are, our souls. Let this sink in. You are fearfully and wonderfully made by a God who knows you intimately and loves you completely. Embrace the identity He has given you and live out the purpose he has created for you.

Questions for Reflection:

  • When you have been faced with worry or at a crossroads, how hard is it for you to say, “Let go, let God”?
  • When was the last time you noticed God’s moments in your life that show your life was planned out from the beginning of your creation?

Prayer:

Dear God,
Thank you for making me with a purpose. Thank you for loving me from the inside out. You are my creator and have my life planned out for me. I take comfort in knowing you are with me every step of the way. In your name I pray, Amen.
