1 Corinthians 13:1-3
“I may have all the faith needed to move mountains but if I have no love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 (GNT)
There is a famous story about a Marine making a special visit to the hospital on an elderly man in the hospital who was dying. As the Marine became more and more aware of the dying elderly person, he made the decision to stay with him. He was very intense in his caring of the elderly man. His vulnerability and compassion was very obvious. He stayed all night and was not bothered by the interruptions by nurses. The Marine held the hand of the dying man much of the time. The elderly man died early in the morning after a long night of suffering…..The nurse said, “I am assuming you were the son of the elderly man.” The Marine said, “No, he was not my father! “I’ve never seen the man before!” The nurse asked why he gave the man so much outstanding attention and compassion. The Marine replied, “Because he needed me.” ….The conversation continued between the nurse and the Marine. The Marine said he was at the hospital because he had been assigned to tell the elderly man his son had been killed in the Iraq war and the Marine had come to the hospital to report the death… ..So the next time someone needs you …. STAY.
Jesus says in John 13:35 (NIV) - “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
