James 1:2-4
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4 (NIV)
This verse tells us to consider trials as opportunities for joy, understanding that these trials help us to test and strengthen our faith. These trials, or hardships, are not meant to be viewed as obstacles, but as opportunities for growth, maturity and a stronger faith. In thinking about it in this way, we as Christians can find joy in the process of developing spiritual strength as we face our challenges.
As I have shared in previous devotions, I have always told my kids that God has a plan for them. We can be rest assured that God knows what will happen and will lead us toward it. But it does not mean that it will be smooth sailing during the journey. The idea of blind faith is scary for us.
I have struggled for many years with my relationship with my parents. The struggles became more apparent for me when I had kids of my own and I realized what real positive family dynamics looked and felt like. It was a difficult time for me and I endured a lot of sadness during the journey. Many times I remember asking myself, “why me?” But now that I am further through this journey, I realized what God was doing for me. As tough as it was, I am actually happier and more at peace now. It is hard to believe that joy can be found in pain and loss. But it has made me trust in my faith and grow in more ways than I could have imagined. James 1:2-4 teaches us that trials are tools God uses to grow us. I am grateful God saw potential growth in me and showed me the way to a more joy filled life.
So, if you are facing a challenging time, don’t give up. Instead, lean in. God is shaping you into someone who is strong, trusting and complete.
Questions for Reflection:
- What trial have you been put through in your life? How have you seen God work through you?
- How does testing my faith produce perseverance?
Prayer:
Dear God, When I have been faced with an obstacle or challenge, help me to trust you. Help me to remember that the trials have a purpose to grow me. Use these challenges to shape into who I was created to be. In your name I pray, Amen.
