Psalm 92:1-4

It is good to praise the Lord  and make music to your name, O Most High,  proclaiming your love in the morning   and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre  and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord; I sing for joy at what your hands have done. Psalm 92:1-4 (NIV)

I’ve never considered myself musically talented, but I do like music. Mostly I listen though you may see me in church (or the grocery store) dancing. At home (and in the car) I sing with wild abandon and when I’m feeling a little blue, I have a playlist guaranteed to get me going.

I joke that I only sing aloud in church because God forgives all sins. But the reality is God doesn’t care that I can’t hold a tune. Or even know what a tune (or melody) is. But it’s a hard thing to get over – that embarrassment of singing off-key.

I would imagine Peter was embarrassed (ashamed even). After all, he had denied Jesus 3 times. Peter, the one who had been with Jesus the entire time. Peter, the one who had seen all the wonders Jesus had performed. Jesus had even told him he’d do it and yet still Peter denied.

But Peter’s embarrassment or shame didn’t stop him from becoming the cornerstone of the church. Peter’s deeds – how he continued to preach and share the good news of Jesus must’ve made Jesus glad indeed.

Maybe it’s time to remember that God doesn’t care that I can’t sing in tune. That I can’t read music or even play an instrument. Maybe it’s time to remember that praising the Lord doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be heartfelt. Maybe it’s time for me to let go of my embarrassment and sing with joy for joy.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How do I praise the Lord with music?
  • What does joyful singing sound like to me?
  • Challenge yourself to sing aloud in church even if you don’t think your voice is “good enough.”

Prayer

Lord, help me proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness every evening. I may not always sing in tune, but you make me glad indeed. Amen.

PraiseJoy
