Psalm 91:11-13
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot. Psalm 91:11-13 (NRSVUE)
These verses reminded me of an event that happened March 1, 1950, in Beatrice, Nebraska. The West Side Baptist Church had regular choir practice at 7:20 each week. There were about fifteen choir members expected at the church that evening. Every one of them was late to practice for various reasons. Two members had car trouble. One wanted to solve a homework problem. One fell asleep & woke up late. One family had to do a quick clothing change & iron a new dress. Another wanted to finish a letter they were writing. And yet another wanted to hear the end of a favorite radio show. At 7:25 there was an explosion at the church & it was completely destroyed. No one was inside the church at the time of the explosion.
We may never know why things happen the way they do. We may never understand why sometimes folks seem to be protected in a situation vs. not. We may be protected from things, situations, people without ever knowing. These verses remind us that God’s protection is always with us. It’s not a promise of a life without hardship, but nothing can overpower God’s care and love for us. He is always with us. There is something deeply comforting about knowing we are not alone.
Questions for Reflection:
- Where have you seen God’s hand at work in your life or the lives of others?
- What are those “God moments” that cannot be otherwise explained?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the unseen ways You protect and guide us. Help us to walk in faith, knowing that you watch over us at all times. Teach us to trust your promise to never leave us alone. Amen.
