Matthew 10:29-31

What's the price of a pet canary? Some loose change, right? And God cares what happens to it even more than you do. He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail-even numbering the hairs on your head! So don't be intimidated by all this bully talk. You're worth more than a million canaries. Matthew 10:29-31 (MSG)

In 2020, we lost our almost 12-year-old German Shepherd. He was a part of our family - the first living being for which Ross and I were fully in charge of caring. It was a sorrowful, painful loss, but then in 2024, we lost our 12-year-old son, and that was the kind of heartbreak from which our hearts will never fully recover, at least not until that hole is mended in Heaven.

This version of Matthew 10:29-31 spoke to me, because while I truly loved both our pet and our son, there is a huge difference in the type and size of that love.

To know that God’s love for us is not the pet kind of love but the BIG ALL-ENCOMPASSING parent type of love, really puts things into perspective for me.

As a parent, I would never let anything happen to or hurt my children that was within my control - I may even do something seemingly crazy just to spare them, without a second thought, no matter what. So, it is reassuring to know that I have a God that is looking out for me, my children, and all human-beings like a loving parent. This should give us all a sense of safety and peace. For if you are a parent or have a loving relationship with your parents, you know there are no boundaries to this kind of love, nothing you or anyone else can do to sever it. God’s agape love is for us all, now and always. I pray this warms your heart and brings you peace.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have you ever felt like you don’t deserve God’s love?
  • When you mess up, do you turn to our loving God for advice?
  • What can you do today to make God proud?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for always loving me, no matter what. Like a parent, you created me, and like a parent, you love me. Just like my earthly parents, I want to make you proud, but I know I will struggle and make mistakes. However, I am grateful to know that no matter how many mistakes I make or what I am facing, you’ll always be there with open arms to welcome me, love me, and help me. Thank you, Father. I love you too! Amen
