Romans 12:15-18

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.  Romans 12:15-18 (NRSVUE)

Every 4 years our world seems to almost be a “Heaven on Earth” for a couple of weeks. Yes, I’m talking about the Olympics. Our family has really enjoyed watching many of the events throughout the competition. The modern Olympics have been going for 128 years. The ancient Olympics started in 776 B.C.! Amazing! The world has come together in good sportsmanship to compete in a safe and welcoming environment. During the games, we saw competitors weeping with those who lost and rejoicing with all the winners.  One Gold Medal Olympian was asked what was the most memorable part of the games, and she said: “making the world proud.” The Famous Rapper, Snoop Dogg, said that the best part of the Olympics was the “unity and harmony“ of all the countries and participants.

No matter the socio-political differences, the world got along for 14 days in Paris. The unanimity of all is unprecedented, considering the state of the world right now. (Although I do realize that Russia was not invited.) As Calvin the reformer said: “for the chief virtue of the faithful is moderation or rather lowliness of mind, which ever prefers to give honor to others, rather than to take it away from them.” Many Gold medalists were inviting the Silver and Bronze winners up to the top step with them. Everyone was giving hugs and being congratulatory to all the countries, winners or losers. True joy for all, and with all.

Paul says in our scripture for today: “rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with one another. . . live peaceably with all.” Wow, that would be heaven on earth, and for 2 weeks it is just that. God must be smiling. Just think that if we can be in harmony during sporting activities, why couldn’t we do that all the time?

Now we come back to our world’s reality and pray for peace throughout the war zones of our world. As long as we can talk to each other, there is hope for peace.

Peace on earth. Heaven on earth.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What was your favorite part of the Olympics? What made you most proud or humbled?
  • Do you think there is a chance that Paul’s words in Romans could actually come true?

Prayer:

Dear God of all,
We thank you for rejoicing with us in our accomplishments, helping us to live peaceably, and teaching us to love our neighbors around the globe. Keep us always mindful of the needs of others, and may we share our joys and sorrows freely with one another. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen

I enjoy the numerous activities offered at our Immanuel Retirement Community like the choirs, water color painting, mat making for the city mission, and so much more! It is an exciting and great place to be! Southwood’s on-line worship services have continued to be such a blessing to me.
