Galatians 5:22-26

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26 (NRSVUE)

I am just a few days away from wrapping up my 27th school year teaching upper elementary students, which means the desires of a summer break are upon all of us in the building. Our students have done a fantastic job coming to school each day ready to learn and teachers have continued to challenge students to meet the standard of excellence we expect in our building. As students and staff see our remaining days dwindle, the expectations of verses 22 and 23 can become a bit more challenging for some. Patience can run thin, kindness gives way to short tempers, the gentleness of two hand touch football looks more like Friday night lights, and the joy of being together can hopefully be restored by a few weeks of separation.

For me, the inconsistent schedules of summer come as a refreshing change. I appreciate the mental reset, more family time and an opportunity to learn and plan for next school year. I also try to spend time during the summer specifically focusing on how I'm living my life in His name and where I'm failing. I am imperfect in so many ways, yet lean on my belief in our Lord for the forgiveness of my sins. In verse 24 we are challenged to be guided by the Spirit if we are choosing to live by the Spirit. A task that can be very hard to do when our well intended words do not match the reality of our thoughts and actions. The great news is, it's never too late for a reset!

As you and your family prepare to dive into summer and all that your potentially altered schedules bring, remember that we are all children of God, imperfect and forgiven. For those who can enjoy family, ballgames, vacations and weekends at the lake, make the most of those moments! Also remember that not everyone has those opportunities and may need some of your time, generosity and kindness. So reach out to someone who may need your ear, lead by example, thank God for all we are given, let the Spirit guide you and remember that church is still open and waiting for you each Sunday morning all summer long!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do you take the time for a spiritual reset to focus on the gifts and blessings in your life?
  • How can you help and guide others to make improved choices?

Prayer:

Dear God,
As we move farther away from Easter on the calendar, may our hearts and minds stay locked into the gift of the death and resurrection of Jesus each day. May your Spirit lead us, may we listen to that guidance and remind us to spend time in reflection of our thoughts and deeds in your name.
Amen
