Romans 5:1-5

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.  And not only that but we also boast in our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Romans 5:1-5 (NRSVUE)

The situation felt hopeless. Her worst fears were unfolding before her eyes. How could God let this happen? Why? She felt disconnected, alone, abandoned. Yet her feet stepped towards God, even when she felt angry with him for this path she was walking on. This path was not part of her plan. This was not what she had expected. As she stepped into the chapel, she noticed a cracked clay jar in the corner. Underneath was a note that caught her eye. The note said, “This broken jar still holds light.” She noticed a small candle flickering inside. The cracks let the light out more than if the jar had been perfect. Her eyes were opened with realization. For the first time, she prayed not for restoration but for peace.

Years later, she stood in that same chapel offering support for another who was walking a similar path as the one she had walked years before. She offered these words, “We think peace comes when everything is fixed. But peace with God doesn’t come from perfect outcomes – it comes from being held in our brokenness. Suffering doesn’t mean God has abandoned us. In fact, He meets us there. And somehow, He turns it into hope. A hope that shines through the cracks.”

Questions for Reflection:

  • When have you experienced God’s peace on a difficult path?
  • How have you been a light to others?
  • How might God’s light shine through you for someone else in the future?

Prayer:

Father, thank you for your promise to be with us when the path is smooth and when it is rough. When we feel lost, please help us to stay close to you and to remember your peace can be found even in uncertain times. Help us to see your light through the cracks and to share your light with others in times of need. Amen.
