Mark 9:33-37
They came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” He took a little child whom He placed among them. Taking the child in His arms, He said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me; and whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me but the one who sent Me.” Mark 9:33-37 (NIV)
Many times, the Bible and Jesus’s teachings, asks questions simply to encourage us to think and direct our attention to the issue He wishes to address. The questions don't reflect a lack of knowledge, but instead provide an opportunity for us to take responsibility for our actions and reactions.
Mark 9:33-37 is about Jesus teaching his disciples the importance of humility and servanthood by using a child as an example.
He does so by reflecting on the qualities of a child. Children are seen as innocent, pure, and humble beings. Jesus emphasizes the importance of humility and simplicity in our lives by referencing a child. Jesus calls us to let go of our pride and ego and adopt a humble and servant-hearted attitude, just as a child.
One way to cultivate our humility is by serving others (one of Southwood’s major emphases) without seeking recognition or praise. When we serve others selflessly, we demonstrate a willingness to humble ourselves and prioritize the well-being of others above our own desires. This mindset allows us to approach service with a genuine spirit of humility and a desire to uplift and support those in need.
By doing this, we emulate the sacrificial love shown by Jesus in this verse, and embody the essence of true humility in our interactions with God and others.
Questions for Reflection:
- When hearing or reading a Bible verse, do you reflect on the issue it addresses?
- If yes, does this cause you to consider your actions and reactions, as they relate to the issue of the verse?
- Do you routinely act with a servant attitude?
- If not, what causes you to not to act in this manner?
- When you do serve, can you place your personal interest aside and focus on others exclusively?
Prayer:
Lord, help us to always act with humility and selflessness. Keep our attention on the needs of others and how we may serve, versus our personal interests. Allow us to act as You desire to uplift and support those in need. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
