John 1:12-13

But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13 (NRSVUE)

I’m such a proud dad of our three wonderful boys. They each have unique personalities, talents and interests that shine through and guide them as they continue to grow. Our conversations with each are as different as how we spend our time with them. Books, music, sports, technology, art and cooking currently drive their time. Even though they portray numerous differences, one glaring similarity in each is their ever evolving Faith. All three boys believe in God, ask tons of age appropriate questions about Faith and willfully participate in lots of ways at church. In addition, they have a wonderful support system in their baptismal sponsors, family and friends to help guide them along the way. We are blessed! They are children of God.

Each of our own faith journeys is markedly different from the next and can go through an ebb and flow over time. As we grow and mature, how we choose to spend our time using our mind and body varies, as does the focus on our relationship with God. While some families grow up in weekly attendance in Sunday school and church, others are monthly or more sporadic. Even though regularly worshiping together is desired, God’s love for us and our love for Him is not based on our church attendance or good works. In verse 12, God asks that we receive and believe in Him. We can demonstrate that acknowledgement of Faith not only in church, but also at work, when traveling, or by how we spend and give our time with our family, friends and community. We are All children of God.

As this school year comes to a close, many of our family schedules will change over the upcoming summer months. If you have children at home, create ways to spend more time with them. Use those opportunities to continually grow your relationships with your kids and grandkids, including talking about God and His Love for us. Hopefully you are available to attend church regularly over the summer, but no matter if you are at church, on a vacation or at a ball field, you are a loved child of God, born of His will. May your relationship with God grow and Faith shine wherever you are!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Where do you feel you are today with your relationship with God?
  • Where and how do you profess your faith in God?

Prayer

Dear God,
Thank you for the gift of life and being a saved, child of God. May we live our lives honoring you along our journey of Faith. Guide our hearts and minds today and always.
Amen
