Psalm 114

Psalm 114 begins with a memorably, miraculous story from the book of Exodus in the Bible.

“When the Israelites escaped from Egypt – when the family of Jacob left that foreign land – the land of Judah became God’s sanctuary, and Israel became his kingdom. The Red Sea saw them coming and hurried out of their way! The water of the Jordan River turned away.” Psalm 114:1-3 (NLT)

The anonymous author knew this story well and wanted readers of this Psalm to remember it also. The author goes on to remind us that God’s presence and control over nature shows His greatness and glory.

“What’s wrong, Red Sea, that made you hurry out of their way? What happened, Jordan River, that you turned away? Why, mountains, did you skip like rams? Why, hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. He turned the rock into a pool of water; yes, a spring of water flowed from solid rock.” Psalm 114:5-8 (NLT)

As Christians, this Psalm should help us recognize and celebrate God’s complete power, authority, and presence in our lives for eternity. Thanks be to God – AMEN!

Questions for Reflection:

  • How can the Psalms help and support you as you read through the Bible this year?
  • How can I use what I read in the Psalms to support others around me?

Prayer:

Dear God,
Thank you for your unchangeable presence in my life. Please help me to use your word to guide and direct my path in life. Amen
