Hebrews 8:10–12
This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. Hebrews 8:10–12 (NIV)
Giving Ourselves Grace
I don't know about you, but sometimes I feel like life is moving a hundred miles an hour. Between family, work, schedules, responsibilities, and trying to make sure everyone else has what they need, it's easy to get caught up in everything going on around us.
And sometimes, in the middle of all that, I forget to slow down and focus on what really matters.
When I read Hebrews 8:10–12, what stands out to me most is God's promise to be with us, to know us personally, and to forgive us.
I think sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to do everything right. To be a good parent, spouse, friend, leader, or whatever role we happen to be filling that day. We want to make the right decisions, say the right things, and be there for everyone.
But the reality is, we're human. We make mistakes. We lose our patience. We get overwhelmed. We say things we wish we hadn't, and sometimes we look back and wonder if we could have handled something differently.
I know I do.
What I love about this scripture is the reminder that God doesn't expect perfection from us. He wants a relationship with us.
He knows our hearts. He knows when we're trying our best, even on the days when our best doesn't feel like enough.
Verse 12 is especially meaningful because God promises mercy and forgiveness. And I think that's something we all need to be reminded of.
How often do we forgive someone else but struggle to forgive ourselves? How often do we replay something in our minds, wishing we could go back and change it?
God offers us forgiveness through Jesus, yet sometimes we're the ones who refuse to let things go.
Maybe that's something we can all work on this month. Giving ourselves a little more grace. Remembering that one bad day doesn't make us a bad person. One mistake doesn't define who we are. And just because we don't have everything figured out doesn't mean we're failing.
I also love the part about God writing His ways on our hearts. To me, that's a reminder that faith isn't just about going to church on Sunday or reading our Bible when we find the time. It's about how we live every day.
It's about showing kindness when we're frustrated, choosing patience when we're overwhelmed, offering forgiveness when it's difficult, and remembering to be thankful even when life feels chaotic.
And believe me, some days that's easier said than done!
But I think that's the beauty of our relationship with God. We don't have to have everything figured out. We just have to keep showing up, keep trusting Him, and keep trying to become the people He created us to be.
My reminder for this month is simple: Give yourself grace, give others grace, and remember that God's love for you doesn't change just because you've had a hard day.
Questions for Reflection:
- Am I giving myself the same grace and forgiveness that I try to give others?
- Is there something I've been holding on to that I need to let go of and give to God?
- How can I make God a bigger part of my everyday life, even when my schedule is full?
Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for loving me through every season of life, even the messy and overwhelming ones. Help me give myself and others grace, find patience in the busy moments, and trust You when I don't have all the answers. Remind me that I don't have to be perfect and that Your love and forgiveness are always there. Help me keep You at the center of my everyday life.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
